It seems like everyone even loosely involved in the video game industry wants to weigh in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima’s departure from Konami Corp. Well, everyone except for Kojima and Konami, that is.
Some of the people who have already commented on the situation included acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro, who had been working with Kojima on the now-cancelled Silent Hills, as well as Electronic Arts Inc COO Peter Moore, who stated earlier this year that Kojima and Konami should just “kiss and make up.” Now former Square Enix Holdings Co Ltd president Yoichi Wada has added his voice to the mix.
In a recent Facebook post, Wada called out Konami’s treatment of Kojima not only as “cruel,” but also as bad for business.
“As I know Mr. Kojima, I want to say, ‘I can’t believe this cruel treatment!’ But, here I’m going to give my thoughts as a corporate exec,” Wada said (translation via Kotaku). “However you think about this, this is a negative for business.”
“Maybe leaving the home console market is management’s plan, but going out of your way to make enemies with the world has no meaning,” Wada continued, referring to statements Konami made earlier this year that it would be shifting its focus to mobile games and its gambling machine business.
Konami’s actions toward Kojima have angered many fans, especially after the game publisher allegedly prevented Kojima from accepting an award given to his recent critically acclaimed title, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
“Generally, this kind of thing happens when there’s a lack of leadership. I think, perhaps, there isn’t someone in charge who is paying attention and laying out all the little details for whole enterprise.”
Wada concluded that “when you are not aware that the feelings of your own department aren’t aligned with the world at large, the results can be deplorable.”
