If you got a shiny new iPhone for Christmas, you’ve probably poked around in iOS 9 a bit by now. Whether you’re an old hand at Apple’s iOS features or just getting started, you’ll likely need some help navigating some of the new features Apple baked in this time round.
We’ve got a list of “how to” articles and iOS 9 tips and tricks to help you make the most out of your new iPhone and discover some of the not-so-well-known features to make iOS 9 work even harder for you.
How to customize Spotlight proactive search
Spotlight search in iOS 9 is proactive and displays suggested actions for contacts, apps, nearby places and more in three prepopulated sections: Siri Suggestions; Nearby; and News.
If you have no need for all this extra information in search or simply want to fine-tune what you see and what you don’t, you can either revert to the basic search bar or tweak each of the three sections to control what Spotlight search shows you.

How to use the new News app
If you’re in the U.S., U.K. or Australia, you’ll have Apple’s new News app installed on your new iPhone. Apple’s News app delivers a curated news feed from select publications based on your interests and reading habits.

How to set a six-digit passcode

How to add the iOS 9 Battery widget to Notification Center on iPhone
iOS 9 lets you monitor the battery status of other devices connected to your iPhone via a handy battery widget in Notification Center. You can check the battery status of your Apple Watch or Bluetooth connected accessories like headsets, but the widget doesn’t appear by default. Here’s how to add the battery widget to your iPhone’s Notification center.
Extend your iPhone battery life: Manually enable Low Power Mode
To extend the iPhone’s battery life, Apple introduced Low Power Mode in iOS 9. Low Power Mode disables battery-hungry tasks, such as Mail Fetch, Background App Refresh, motion effects and animated wallpapers, resulting in as many as three hours of extra battery life.
When your iPhone’s battery hits 20 percent, you’ll be presented with a popup prompting you to turn on Low Power Mode. If you don’t turn it on at this point, you’ll be promoted again when the battery charge drops to 10 percent.
If you know you’ll need more battery life at the end of the day, you can also manually enable Low Power Mode to save battery power for later.
New ways to put Siri to work for you
A more intelligent, proactive Siri is one of the biggest new features introduced in iOS 9. Now, using just your voice, you can ask Siri to help you find photos using specific dates or locations; create contextual reminders in Safari, Notes and Mail; get public transit directions; perform calculations and conversions faster than ever; and find your friends and family.
