Oculus VR announces cartoony platformer ‘Lucky’s Tale’ will come free with Rift
It is always great when multimedia devices launch with software to show off their capabilities, and to that end, Oculus VR announced today that every Oculus Rift device will come with a free copy of Lucky’s Tale, a cartoony platformer created by Playful Corp that appears to be reminiscent of games like Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie.
“We always believed there was an opportunity for platformers in VR, but it wasn’t until playing Lucky’s Tale and working with the Playful team that we truly realized its potential to change how people view this genre of gaming forever,” Oculus founder and CEO Palmer Luckey said in a statement. “Lucky’s Tale delivers on everything you want in a next-generation VR game – it’s thrilling, full of adventure, and incredibly fun to play.”
Luckey had already demonstrated his love for the game earlier this month.
In its announcement, Oculus noted that Playful Corp founder and CEO Paul Bettner was one of the original $5,000 backers of the Oculus Rift Kickstarter, which included a backer reward of being able to visit to the Oculus office.
“It was clear from the beginning that he and the Playful team saw the potential of VR — they created dozens of game prototypes for Rift over the last three years,” Oculus said in its announcement. “Their passion for creating fun, awe-inspiring VR games shows in one of the most unique experiences that will launch on Rift next year.”
Lucky’s Tale is not the only game shipping with Oculus Rift. Earlier this month, the VR developer announced that Eve: Valkyrie by Icelandic game studio CCP Games would be included with all pre-orders of the Rift.
“EVE: Valkyrie is one of the most anticipated virtual reality games, and one of the first true VR games to go into development,” Luckey said at the time. “It perfectly captures the promise of immersive gaming, shooting you into a sci-fi adventure as you pilot a spaceship in search of combat. Battling your friends (and enemies) in multiplayer space dogfights is the ultimate VR thrill, and we’re excited to partner with CCP to bring this experience to Rift owners everywhere.”
