Oculus Rift is finally available to pre-order this week, but how much will it cost?

The actual launch date hasn’t been released yet, but Oculus VR, LLC has just announced that pre-orders of the Rift headset will be available at 8 a.m. Pacific Time on January 6. As of yet it’s still a mystery how much the virtual reality device will cost, but when pre-orders start, that and the shipping date will become known.

Moreover, Palmer Luckey, cofounder of Oculus, will be answering questions come Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET in a Reddit AMA. Not much else was said by Oculus except, “As a reminder, every Rift comes bundled with Lucky’s Tale by Playful, and we’re also including CCP’s EVE: Valkyrie for free with every pre-order!”

As for the cost, the headset isn’t aimed at the mainstream yet, according to an interview back in June 2015 between Luckey and Re/code. In the interview, Luckey said that people have to accept that they are going to have to “spend a lot of money” (in the region of $1,500), adding that people also have to remember that they are going to need a damn powerful PC to run it. VR will become mainstream at some point said Luckey, but he added, “In these early days, probably for at least two years, VR is going to be primarily for gamers and enthusiasts that are willing to invest in high-end machines.”

Another thing is if people are going to spend a huge amount of money on a VR headset then they will also demand a decent selection of games. According to reports, as well as the aforementioned bundled games, Oculus Rift will soon include other titles, including space survival adventure game Adrift; action-adventure game Edge of Nowhere; and atmospheric role-playing game RPG Chronos. Now that Oculus has teamed up with Microsoft and Xbox One, games such as Halo, Forza, and Sunset Overdrive will also be available to play through the headset.
