Slowly sinking ship: Up to 5 Twitter executives set to depart company

Slowly sinking messaging come microblogging service Twitter, Inc. is facing yet another shakeup, with reports at the weekend suggesting that it may be about to lose up to five top executives.

According to multiple reports from Re/Code the list of those departing the company includes Vice President Senior Engineering Alex Roetter, Vice President Global Media Katie Jacobs Stanton, Vice President Product Kevin Weil and General Manager of Vine Jason Toff.

A separate report from Business Insider suggests Twitter’s Vice President Global Business Development Jana Messerschmidt may also be on the list of people leaving the company.

None of the departures are confirmed, but it’s believed that only Stanton is leaving on her own volition, whereas the other four are being shown the door as part of a broader change to the leadership team at Twitter following the appointment of Jack Dorsey as Chief Executive Officer in October.

Twitter is said to be officially announcing the departures Monday at the same time it announces a new Chief Marketing Officer, said to be a fairly well-known executive from a “big brand company.”

Slowly sinking ship

We’ve previously compared changes to Twitter as being a case of rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, although in this case a better comparison might be a slowly sinking ship that is desperately changing salvage tugs in an attempt to stop the ship sinking altogether.

Nothing the company has attempted over the last 12 months, including bigger photos, dumping likes for hearts, television commercials, and more, has arrested its decline; while they have, to their credit, managed to wring more revenue out of what they have, this doesn’t negate the fact that they are actually losing users, something that the market is well aware of given that stock in TWTR is currently trading at all-time lows.

It is still fairly early days in Jack Dorsey’s reign as Chief Executive Officer and perhaps he can turn the ailing company around, but then again sometimes hitting the iceberg and sinking is inevitable.

Stay tuned as we cover what Re/Code jokingly called “Twittergeddon” as the new week unfolds.
