Ouch: Microsoft recalls power cords for Surface Pro models due to cases of fires and electric shocks

Earlier this month news broke concerning Microsoft getting ready to replace power cords for its Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 models sold prior to March 15th, 2015 (first reported July 2015).

This was confirmed by a Microsoft spokesperson to ZDNet who wrote in an email, “As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord.”

This was recently made more official when the US Consumer Product Safety Commission released a report stating that there has been a total of, “56 reports of AC cords overheating and emitting flames and five reports of electrical shock to consumers.”

The remedy, says the report, is to unplug any cords that have been recalled and get in touch with Microsoft to ask for a replacement. The recalled cords belonged to approximately 2.25 million machines bought in the US and online from February 2013 to March 2015. The report states that another 190,000 machines were sold in Canada.

This follows Apple Inc.’s recall of plug adapters sold with Mac and iOS devices in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, continental Europe, New Zealand and South Korea (not in the US) over the last 12 years. Overall there has been 12 incidents worldwide of people suffering electric shocks due to these adapters.

In order to claim your free replacement AC power cord go to www.microsoft.com and follow the directions from there. Consumers can also call Microsoft toll-free for more information at (855) 327-7780.
