IBM said to be scoping out Bruce Schneier’s Resilient Systems

IBM is said to be out shopping for security experts and technology, and could be about to land incident response solution provider Resilient Systems, Inc., in a deal valued at $100 million.

Business news website Xconomy cites “persons with knowledge of the matter” as its source of the rumors.

The Register speculates the deal could well be an “acqui-hire”, because Resiient’s CTO is none other than the renowned security expert, cryptographer and privacy specialist Bruce Schneier, author of the popular “Schneier on Security” blog.

Schneier isn’t the only talent at Resilient that IBM might be interested in. The Massachusetts-based startup was co-founded back in 2010 under its old name of Co3 Systems by John Bruce, a man who is no stranger to acquisitions, having previously worked at Quickcomm Software Solutions, Inc. (which was later acquired by Vodafone Group plc), Authentica (acquired by EMC Corp.) and Counterpane Internet Security, Inc. (acquired by BT Group plc).

The deal may not be an acqui-hire though, because IBM and Resilient already have a relationship of sorts. Most recently, Resilient appeared at IBM’s InterConnect 2016 event where it showcased an integration of its incident response platform with IBM’s QRadar X-Force.

It would be a good time to acquire Resilient right now, because the company is experiencing some seriously rapid growth. Just this month, the company put out a press release saying its revenues are growing at a rate of 350 percent annually. As a result the company saw fit to hire a number of new executives to oversee its operations in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

If true, the acquisition would be the latest in a raft of deals IBM had tied up so far in 2016. Big Blue has bought a number of ad tech-related companies in the last two months, as well as the Germany-based fraud-detection outfit Iris Analytics GmbH.
