Joe Tucci retirement looms as Michael Dell reveals future executive team

What with Dell Inc.’s acquisition of EMC Corp. seemingly on track after securing regulatory approval in both the U.S. and in Europe, Michael Dell is now confident enough to announce his plans for the new company’s leadership once the deal goes through.

Dell the man announced his plans in an company-wide email to staff at Dell, saying: “We are making strong progress on our plans to combine Dell and EMC … The transaction is on schedule under the original timetable and the original terms.”

Without further ado, Dell then spelled out who’s going to be the top dogs in the newly merged organization, starting with Jeremy Burton, currently President of Products & Marketing at EMC, who’s earmarked to be the new Chief Marketing Officer, with responsibility for brand, events, marketing analytics, digital and communications.

Jeff Clarke, who currently serves as vice chairman, Operations and president, Client Solutions, for Dell, is set to become the new Vice Chairman and President for Operations and Client Solutions, with responsibility for the new company’s global supply chain and end user computing organizations.

Meanwhile, David Goulden, who is Chief Executive Officer of EMC Information Infrastructure, the largest business in the EMC federation, will become the President of Dell/EMC’s new Enterprise Systems Group, with responsibility for global infrastructure organization including servers, storage, networking, converged infrastructure and solutions.

Another top EMC exec, Bill Scannell, who serves as President of Global Sales and Customer Operations, will become the new company’s President of Enterprise Sales, reporting directly to David Goulden. In addition, he’ll lead the global go-to-market organization serving Dell/EMC’s Enterprise customers.

Other executives mentioned in the email included Virtustream CEO Rodney Rogers and Amit Yoran, President of RSA, both of whom retain their existing job titles. Elsewhere, Rohit Ghai has been named as president of the Enterprise Content Division; and Marius Haas will be the new president and chief commercial officer, “responsible for our global go-to-market organization serving Commercial customers.”

You can see the full list of executive appointments in Michael Dell’s email here.

In addition to those appointments, Dell the CEO also said he was planning to establish a new executive group that includes the presidents of each business unit and go-to-market organization.

“The executive group will include: Pat Gelsinger, CEO, VMware; Mike Cote, President and CEO, SecureWorks; Rob Mee, CEO, Pivotal; and Rodney Rogers, CEO, Virtustream,” Dell wrote in the email. “This group will collaborate on innovative and differentiated solutions, optimize our operations to increase the speed and agility with which we serve our customers, and find ways to work together more efficiently and effectively as an organization.”

Dell said that the new organizational structure will be effective as soon as the transaction is completed.

The big absence in this list is of course EMC’s current CEO and President Joe Tucci, but that doesn’t come as a big surprise. It’s long been said that Tucci wants to retire, and now it looks as though that will be happening sooner rather than later.

“I want to thank Joe Tucci for his insights and assistance,” Dell wrote in his email.
