New Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge vs. rumored iPhone 7, 7 Plus
Unless you’ve been living on the dark side of the moon, you’ve by now seen the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge handsets launched by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. a little over a week ago.
As flagship handsets, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are taking on Apple’s iPhone 6s and 6s Plus — at least for the next 7 months, because that’s how long we’ll have to wait to see what this year’s iPhones (due out in September) bring to the fight.
Apple fans are no doubt keen to see the new iPhones — dubbed the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus — but many Samsung fans will also be wondering if they should get a Galaxy S7 or hold off until the iPhone 7 comes out.
Luckily there’s no shortage of rumors and leaks purporting to reveal the iPhone 7’s specs. Below we take a look at how the new Galaxy S7 compares to the rumored specs of the iPhone 7 and dive a little deeper into a few of the standout features.

Design
Galaxy S7 / S7 edge: The new devices are not that much different from the old, but there are a few key changes. The S7 and S7 edge have curved glass backs, making them easier to pick up from flat surfaces and more natural to hold. Both handsets are narrower than their predecessors, but still significantly thicker than the rumored thickness of the upcoming iPhones.
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: Although rumored to be similar in design to the current iPhones, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus might lose the protruding rear camera bulge and the antenna bands on the back of the casing. Instead, the antenna bands will be at the top, bottom, and sides of the casing.
The iPhone 7 might also be only 6.1 millimeters thick (one millimeter thinner than the iPhone 6s) thanks to the removal of the conventional 3.5-millimeter headphone jack and the implementation of a thinner Lightning port.
With the new design, headphones will connect to the iPhone 7 via the Lightning connector or wirelessly via Bluetooth. Apple is said to be working on EarPods with a Lightning connector to ship with the iPhone 7 as well as Bluetooth-enabled Beats “AirPods” to sell alongside it.
The headphone jack may be replaced by a second speaker, which will make the iPhone 7 the first ever iPhone to ship with stereo audio.
Processor, memory, storage
Galaxy S7 / S7 edge: In the U.S., the S7 and S7 edge are powered by Qualcomm’s latest quad-core Snapdragon 820 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM while other markets will get Samsung’s own, equally powerful Exynos 8890 octa-core SoC.
Samsung has made two changes that trump Apple’s offering: its brought back support for a microSD card (via a hybrid SIM tray) and reintroduced water and dust resistance (last seen on the Galaxy S5). Both devices are IP68 rated, meaning they are dust resistant and can withstand immersion in shallow water for up to 30 minutes.
The S7 and S6 edge have 3000mAh and 3600mAh batteries respectively, both with support for wireless charging.
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: New iPhone, new processor. A next-gen A10 chip for use in the iPhone 7 is said to go into production in June. Along with a new chip, Apple may give the iPhone 7 Plus a significant performance boost with 3GB of RAM, combined with a new 256GB storage option. The iPhone 7 will keep the 2GB of RAM and 16/64/128GB storage options from the iPhone 6s.
As for battery size, the iPhone 7 Plus might ship with a 3100 mAh battery, up from the 2750 mAh unit found on the iPhone 6 Plus. There’s been no mention of the battery in the iPhone 7.
Although Apple has filed patents for wireless charging and self-healing ports (for water-resistance), there has been no solid evidence that these features will make their way into this year’s iPhones — advantage, Samsung.
Camera
Galaxy S7 / S7 edge: At 12-megapixels, the S7 and S7 edge may appear to have downgraded cameras, but Samsung has introduced what it calls “Dual Pixel” technology. The Dual Pixel tech supposedly has a brighter lens with wider aperture, bigger pixels, faster shutter speeds, and more accurate autofocus. What this equates to, claims Samsung, is brighter, sharper images, even in low light.
There’s also a new camera mode, called Motion Panorama, that “brings movement to traditional panoramic photos, giving the user a completely immersive visual experience.”
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: Apart from the rear camera bulge disappearing, Apple might launch two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus: one with a single 12MP lens and a second model with a dual-lens camera setup that could deliver DSLR-like performance and 2-3x optical zoom functionality.
