Yahoo Inc has become the latest media company to hop on the esports bandwagon with the launch of its own pro-gaming news and analysis site, Yahoo Esports.
The new vertical appears to be aiming to fill that “ESPN of Esports” role that so many companies have tried to claim for themselves, including both ESPN itself and game publisher Activision Blizzard Inc. ESPN launched its own esports vertical earlier this year, and Activision Blizzard Inc CEO Bobby Kotick actually used the phrase “the ESPN of Esports” when announcing his company’s purchase of Major League Gaming for $46 million.
Yahoo Esports has already released a number of videos on the new site under the banner of Yahoo Sports Videos, with topics ranging from pro player interviews to tournament recaps and more.
“We’re approaching our coverage of esports with the same tenacity and professionalism we always have with Yahoo Sports, News and Finance,” Bob Condor, Vice President of Yahoo Sports Media, said in a statement. “Coupled with our experience in building great products, we’ve gone out and assembled an experienced and innovative content team that will cover esports from every angle.”
“Today, esports fans jump from place to place to understand what’s happening across professional gaming,”added Matt Edelman, Product Manager at Yahoo Esports. “We’re launching a comprehensive destination for esports fans everywhere, focused on delivering professional analysis, video content, live matches, team rosters, schedules, chat and more. And because esports is 24/7, we’ll hide all spoilers by default so fans can enjoy matches on their time.”
Currently, Yahoo Esports seems to be focusing on the big three competitive games (League of Legends, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive), which dominate the most-viewed games on Twitch, where most esports events are watched. It also has coverage for Heroes of the Storm and the recently released Street Fighter V.
The company said that other games will be added to its coverage in the future.
