Watch Blizzard’s first Overwatch animated short featuring Winston

Blizzard Entertainment has released the first in a series of animated shorts for its upcoming team-based shooter, Overwatch, and the studio is kicking things off with everyone’s favorite “super-intelligent, genetically engineered gorilla,” Winston.

Fans were first introduced to Winston in the original cinematic trailer for Overwatch shown at BlizzCon 2014, which also featured the heroes Tracer, Widowmaker, and Reaper.

Here’s Blizzard’s brief description of Winston:

A super-intelligent, genetically engineered gorilla, Winston is a brilliant scientist and champion for humanity’s potential. After spending several years working as a scientist for Overwatch, Winston has gone into seclusion since its fall, cut off from the world he believes in, longing for the days of heroism to return. He wields impressive inventions on the battlefield—including a short-ranged Tesla Cannon, Jump Pack, and Portable Shield Projector. But his most powerful weapon can only be unleashed by embracing his animal nature.

At just under eight minutes in length, “Recall” is a bit longer than the cinematic trailer, which clocked in at exactly six minutes. If Blizzard’s intention with the Overwatch shorts is to leave fans begging for more, than it certainly seems to be on track with “Recall,” which has all of the same polish, humor, and heart of the original trailer.

There is also the chance that Blizzard could be testing the waters for a feature length Overwatch film, and given the fact the Activision Blizzard Inc now owns its own film and television studio, that could actually be a real possibility.

If nothing else, the quality of Blizzard’s first animated short seems to prove that perhaps one day someone will make a decent video game movie.
