Indie hit ‘Stardew Valley’ has sold over 1 million copies

Since launching at the end of February, role-playing game and farming sim Stardew Valley quickly became one of the first indie hits of the year, and now publisher Chucklefish Games has confirmed that the game has now sold over 1 million copies.

“It’s actually at 1,007,000 as of now,” a Chucklefish spokesperson told Polygon. “It’s been really exciting for us to help bring this game to people’s attention, and the success really couldn’t have come to a more deserving person!”

Stardew Valley is the work of a sole developer, Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, who developed the entire game by himself. This included designing and coding the game, as well as creating the artwork, writing all of the dialogue, and even composing the game music.

The project took Barone more than four years to complete, and since release, he has continued releasing a number of free updates for the game that have included quality of life improvements and new content.

While the incredible success that Stardew Valley has enjoyed may be uncommon in the indie game world, it still proves that such success is still possible even in an age when there are more indie games than ever and discoverability is becoming an increasingly difficult problem for indie game developers.

The so-called “Indiepocalypse” has certainly made it harder to make the next Minecraft, but Stardew Valley shows that fans will still flock to a good game, especially when the developer listens and responds to players as Barone has.
