Is Microsoft on the verge of upgrading the Xbox One, or what?

On the heels of the recent rumor that Sony Corp. will be upgrading the PlayStation 4 in October to the PlayStation 4.5, rumors have surfaced that suggest Microsoft has plans to upgrade the Xbox One.

There’s a twist, though.

Earlier in April Microsoft’s Xbox chief Phil Spencer put an end to the rumor that Redmond might be doing something similar to what Sony has been rumored to do and upgrade to a .5 version of its gaming console. In an interview with Gameinformer Spencer said, “I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and-a-half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers.”

This contradicts earlier statements made by Spencer when talking about the new vogue in hardware upgrades for consoles and not waiting about for the next model.

Unlike Sony, whose purported upgrade would not be a big change to the present machine, but a few spec improvements, Spencer said that if Microsoft decided to make any changes then they would be significant. “If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people,”Spencer concluded.

As has been said already, it is very likely that a new Xbox would support Microsoft’s augmented reality headset HoloLens and support for VR.

That said, The Verge recently made a few discoveries that point to Microsoft planning on doing what Spencer hinted wouldn’t happen: upgrading the Xbox One. These included filings with the Federal Communications Commission that Microsoft is looking at a wireless chip for the Xbox One. Such filings with the FCC in the past led to rumors that came true concerning phones.

This gets more exciting because following Microsoft’s Xbox press conference at E3 on June 25, the non-disclosure agreement between Microsoft and the FCC that keeps any photos of a possible new Xbox from being revealed will expire.
