At this year’s OpenStack Summit, taking place in Austin, TX, representatives from companies with connections to the event, both long-term and relatively new, are sharing business strategies and tech developments and offering attendees a look into the current state surrounding open-source stack and cloud management.
Ken Pepple, CTO of Solinea, Inc., joined Stu Miniman (@stu) and Brian Gracely (@bgracely), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, to provide his point of view on OpenStack’s growth and what his company is anticipating for the next wave of changes around it to bring to the market.
Pepple started by giving a short history of Solinea leading up to its current position, at which point he began outlining the sorts of customer bases with which it has found some of its best success. “We see very strong pickup among customers that have their own engineering,” Pepple noted. “They’ve found OpenStack as the best open-source platform.”
Pepple also widened the scope of examination, pointing out, “Increasingly, almost every company is a digital company.” Finding ways to draw companies’ attention to ways in which their digital assets can be made more efficient or put to better use are just a couple of ways in which the wave of digitization is enabling improvements, something on which Solinea has been keeping a close eye.
Pepple gave three points that Solinea has targeted in working with its customers: “How can we automate some of the things that are easy … how can we get better visibility into your environment … and a lot of the customers [who] were early adopters, [how can we serve those] different needs?”
Some other aspects of this examination include determining which applications may end up never going to the cloud, a possibility that many are failing to consider in this time of high excitement around the cloud revolution, as well as ensuring companies maintain control over their cloud to avoid struggles with adjusting parameters later on when needs have changed.
Pepple was happy to note that OpenStack examination has moved from discussions of “Can we get value from this?” to “How do we implement this?” as more and more enterprises recognize the value it can bring to their operations. He felt this was a natural growth, and one that should have been widely anticipated, as, “No matter what service or business you’re in today, being able to deliver your applications with high value … will resonate.”
