The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will take place from June 13 – 17 in San Francisco. The week-long event is where Apple will unveil a variety of new features, operating systems, updates and more.

The rumor mill is in full swing trying to predict what we can expect at WWDC this year, including a Siri SDK, an Apple Music revamp and possibly new MacBook Pros. What is guaranteed at WWDC is that we will see the latest version of iOS and all its new features and updates.

We look at the rumors making the rounds about iOS 10.

Preview and release date

While iOS 10 will be unveiled at WWDC 2016 and developers will be able to get access, the general public will have to wait until mid-September before they can upgrade their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to the latest operating system.

However, if you are super eager to get your hands on the latest operating system you can download the public beta that will likely be made available a few months before the official release date. Last year, Apple made the first version of the public beta available for iOS 9 in July, so a similar timeframe is possible for iOS 10.

Compatibility of iOS 10

If you are the owner of an iPad 2 or iPhone 4s you may not be able to upgrade to iOS 10. As iOS 10 is rumored to require more RAM than these devices have, it is very possible that Apple will not support these older devices.

Users will be able to hide some default apps

A gripe from many iPhone users is the fact that they are not able to hide default apps, thus taking up space on their home screen, in folders or on other screens. Code discovered on the App Store clearly hints at the possibility that Apple will introduce the ability to hide default apps. While it will not be possible to hide all default apps — iCloud, for example — iOS 10 may introduce the ability to hide the majority of them.   

Jailbreaking may become impossible

Apple is reportedly working on a new security system called Rootless that will make it incredibly difficult to jailbreak iOS 10. Redmond Pie reported on the news back in May last year, so whether Apple will reveal it at WWDC on June, 13 is unknown at this stage.

Standalone HealthKit app called Home

Apple’s HomeKit allows you to control your home devices or other connected devices from your iPhone or Mac. However, until now there has never been an accompanying iOS app for HomeKit and users have to rely on controlling HomeKit-enabled devices with Siri.

That may change at WWDC though, with the rumor that Apple will be introducing a standalone iOS app for HomeKit, simply called Home. This is not the first time that the rumored Home app has been spoken about. Backtrack to weeks before WWDC 2015 and the Home app was rumored to make an appearance with iOS 9. We will have to wait and see whether 2016 will be the year that the Home app makes an appearance.

Make sure your friend never misses your call

According to a patent that was granted to Apple, iPhone could be getting a new feature with iOS 10 that will allow them to know where their friends and family are, if they are available and whether their iPhone is on silent or flight mode. All the information would then be presented in the Contacts app. If you are concerned your contacts will start stalking you, the feature (if released) is likely to be optional for both parties.

Siri will be listening to your voicemails

If the rumors are anything to go on, Siri, Apple’s digital assistant, could soon be transcribing your voicemails. The company’s iCloud service will then send you a text message with your transcribed voicemail. The rumored name of the new voicemail service is iCloud Voicemail and will replace standard voicemail. Apart from Siri transcribing your voicemails, iCloud Voicemail will also be able to relay specific messages to certain contacts, for example why you cannot answer the call or where you are currently.    

The WWDC keynote address is scheduled for 10 am PDT on June 13, when many of the rumors surrounding WWDC and iOS 10 will likely be confirmed.
