New technologies foster an open-source environment | #RHSummit

In 2007, when 3scale, Inc. was founded, some people thought it was crazy to be investing so much time and energy into API. But Steven Willmott, CEO of 3scale, Inc., said that even at that time his team knew that the future was API-driven, and they wanted to help that happen.

“Now every customer we talk to is integrating APIs some way in basing their infrastructure,” said Willmott. With 700 customers, including The Telegraph in the UK, airlines and aircraft manufactures, and only 45 employees, the company knew it needed a strong partnership. When they found Red Hat, Inc., it seemed like a perfect match.

Willmott talked to Stu Miniman (@stu) and Brian Gracely (@bgracely), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Red Hat Summit in San Francisco, CA.

An exciting time with a great partner

The team at 3scale noticed that many of its customers were using Red Hat technology, such as JBoss Fuse and OpenShift. With OpenShift, the partnership was further encouraged because it drives microservices adoption and it’s ideal to have API on the front of each of those services, Willmott explained. Fuse also works well with the partnership because it enables you to create APIs in the first place.

“3scale brings the capability to wire those all up, put security on them and see the universe of what you’ve created,” said Willmott.

Their partnership was all the more cemented by this conference. Customers have approached the 3scale booth and expressed how happy they are with the work 3scale is doing and the additional resources made available by the partnership.

“It’s really a dream connection for our team in terms of the kind of company and philosophy that Red Hat has,” said Willmott. And it’s a partnership that continues to grow, as even now they announced the intent to release an On-Premises version of 3scale that would be an open version. With that announcement and a future indicating a huge growth in APIs and the interface on top, Willmott said it’s an exciting time.
