Hybrid schmybrid: The case for ditching your data center and going all-cloud | #AWSSummit

You may have noticed some tech types lately insisting that an on-prem/cloud hybrid is the best way to go for the majority of enterprises. And some organizations like banks regularly express concerns about moving their private data stores to the cloud. But there are others in IT who make the case for ditching your data center and going all in with cloud.

“Any company that is launching today — they would never consider building a traditional data center,” according to Stephen Garden, director of Cloud Services at CorpInfo. He told Jeff Frick (@JeffFrick) and Lisa Martin (@Luccazara), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, it’s not only new companies. Older companies are deciding that cloud infrastructure has advanced to the point where there’s no point maintaining anything on-prem anymore. The cost of physical space and management aren’t worth it, he said.

“I have seen many large-scale enterprises now making that commitment that everything should go unless special approval is required,” Garden said. He noted that the situation has completely reversed from years ago when you had to go through a lot to get approval to put things in the cloud.

Running down the clock

“I think originally people saw hybrid as a technology decision,” said Garden. “It’s actually now just becoming a business case situation — OK, we invested in this architecture, it still has x amount of years left in that life cycle, therefore it makes sense to kind of run that out.”

He added: “It’s going to be lights out for a lot of large in-house data centers I believe over the coming months and years.”

When Martin asked Garden if lingering cloud security concerns were an obstacle to converting customers to all-cloud, Garden responded, “We barely hear that at all anymore. People are very comfortable with the security in the cloud.”
