In-depth look at Microsoft’s new 28-inch Surface Studio all-in-one & wireless Surface Dial

Microsoft Corp. unveiled its first-ever all-in-one desktop at its event in New York Wednesday: the Surface Studio.

The 28-inch Surface Studio display moves effortlessly from near vertical Desktop Mode to a 20-degree Studio Mode, thanks to the Zero Gravity Hinge. While the Surface Dial provides a new way to interact with applications both onscreen and off.

“Surface Studio is a natural extension of the Surface line – Surface Pro was all about tablet modularity, Surface Book was all about notebook modularity and big GPU performance and Surface Studio is all about stylish and tethered creativity with a new input device, the Surface Dial,” said Patrick Moorhead, president and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.

Here’s a look at the detailed technical specs of the Surface Studio, as well as price and availability.

Design and display

The Surface Studio has a 28-inch, 4500 x 3000 PixelSense display with 13.5 million pixels. The display also features the same 3:2 aspect ratio found on the mobile Surface products.

The Zero Gravity Hinge allows the screen to adjust from workstation to digital canvas. While the “True Scale” feature allows you to view your designs in real-world size directly on the Surface Studio.

The Surface Studio comes with a 5MP front-facing camera with 1080p video support. While the sound is powered by 2.1 speakers by Dolby Audio Premium.

Under the hood

The Surface Studio comes with Quad-core 6th-generation Intel Core processors with up to 4GB GDDR5 memory, and up to 2TB Rapid Hybrid Drive storage.

The discrete Nvidia GeForce GPU will allow users to enjoy the latest PC games or VR experiences, including HTC VIVE. Surface Studio supports Xbox Wireless, with the ability to connect up to four Xbox One-compatible controllers.

“Surface Studio won’t be the highest-performance system all-in-one as it’s not intended to compete with the beefiest workstations.  Microsoft played it safe with 6th Gen Intel processors, mobile graphics and USB-3 I/O, but the performance should meet the needs of most creative experts, the intended target market. Microsoft was first to market with 6th Gen Intel processors and learned a lot in the process,” said Moorhead.

Security

The Surface Studio offers enterprise security with a Trusted Platform Module chip and biometric security. While the 5-megapixel camera supports Windows Hello face sign-in, offering enterprise-class authentication.

Surface Dial

The Surface Dial is a wireless rotational peripheral that gives users quick access to tools and shortcuts. With adaptive haptic feedback and 3,600 points of precision, the Surface Dial allows you to manipulate images, adjust volume, change color hues and more. You can also create custom controls for the Surface Dial to suit your specific needs.

The Surface Dial will work off-screen with the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and Surface Book while it offers additional on-screen capabilities for the new Surface Studio. When placed on the Surface Studio’s screen it uses PixelSense technology to detect both the presence and position of Surface Dial.

The Surface Dial integrates with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Ink Replay, Windows Maps, Groove Music and more. It also offers custom integrations from various third-party applications, including Sketchable, Mental Canvas, Drawboard PDF, Moho 12, StaffPad, Siemens PLM Software and Bluebeam Revu.

Price and availability

The base model of the Surface Studio will retail for $2,999. It includes a 6th-generation Core i5 processor, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M 2GB GPU, a 1TB hybrid drive, and 8GB of memory.

The top-of-the-range Surface Studio will retail for $4,199. It comes with a 6th-generation Core i7 processor, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M GPU, 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage.

The Surface Studio is available for pre-order in the U.S. through Microsoft Stores, MicrosoftStore.com and BestBuy.com. It will ship in limited quantities this holiday season with broader availability in early 2017.
