Cloud Native Computing Foundation unveils Fluentd data collector

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which is tasked with nurturing the open-source Kubernetes container orchestration platform project among others, has been busy.

On Tuesday, the group announced a host of new members, a new certification course and a new project at the inaugural Cloud Native Con, which is co-located with the KubeCon event in Seattle.

The biggest news is the new project, called the Fluentd data collector, which becomes the CNCF’s fourth project after Kubernetes, Prometheus and OpenTracing. It allows for a unified logging layer to be implemented in cloud-native architectures. Fluentd comes with more than 600 plugins, which allow it to connect to numerous data sources and outputs, Dan Kohn, executive director of the CNCF, told eWeek.

The idea behind Fluentd is that it will help to solve log data collection and distribution needs at scale when used in conjunction with microservices and generic cloud monitoring tools, Kohn explained.

The second major announcement was around certification on Kubernetes. In a statement, the CNCF explained that there’s a need to start certifying those who have expertise with Kubernetes, and has therefore launched the Kubernetes Manager Service Providers program to do just that.

The program is to certify people and companies, rather than software, and will include an online, proctored certification program to test the curriculum. So far, companies including Apprenda Inc., Canonical Ltd., Cisco Systems Inc., CoreOS Inc., Container Solutions, Deis, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., LiveWyer and Samsung SDS have announced they’re supporting the KMSP program by committing engineers to join the new Certification Working Group, which will help to define the program’s curriculum ahead of its availability in the second quarter of 2017.

Last but not least, the CNCF said it’s expanding its membership, with Samsung SDS joining the fray as a platinum member, while Canonical, DigitalOcean and LiveWyer have all signed on as silver members. The foundation now counts some 65 organizations among its members.
