Oracle launches ‘industry-first’ cloud converged storage service

Oracle Corp. aims to make it cheaper and easier for companies to migrate data to its cloud with the launch today of what it claims is the world’s first service that integrates public cloud with on-premises network-attached storage systems.

The new service is called Cloud Converged Storage, and it comes with the latest Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance release. Cloud Converged Storage is designed to enable organizations to “easily and seamlessly move data and/or applications to the cloud,” while simultaneously eliminating the need for external cloud gateways, Oracle said. In addition, the service helps customers to avoid paying expensive software and cloud access license fees that are charged by some on-premises vendors to allow customers to access the public cloud using their infrastructure platforms.

Oracle reckons that the service means customers will no longer have to contend with issues such as on-premises-to-cloud integration or management of environments comprised of different security requirements, industry standards and skill sets. Indeed, it goes further and claims it’s the only company in the world that can now offer this kind of co-engineered solution, because it’s the only that offers both a public cloud and NAS storage systems.

“With its ZFS Cloud, Oracle simultaneously challenges not only public cloud providers that cannot deliver on-premises, high-performance storage systems, but also traditional hardware vendors that lack truly integrated public clouds,” said Mark Peters, practice director and senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “Oracle is delivering business value with a genuine hybrid data ability with a ‘cloud insurance option’ built right into the storage system, significantly streamlining users’ experiences.”

By converging its Storage Cloud and ZFS Storage Appliances into a single solution, Oracle customers gain several advantages, the company said. These include using Cloud Converged Storage for elastic application storage, backup and recovery, development, testing, archive storage, snapshot replica storage, DevOps and more. In addition, it said, modern applications will be able to leverage data that’s stored both on-premises in Oracle’s ZFS Storage Appliance, and in the Oracle Storage Cloud, without an impact on performance.

The company has also made several enhancements to its Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance, including a new version of its Intelligent Storage Protocol that speeds up tasks such as transaction processing and data backups, an all-flash memory storage pool for additional speed, and a faster data backup solution.

The new latest Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance release is available now, the company said.
