Apple promises fix for iPhone X becoming unresponsive in cold weather

Apple Inc. is promising to fix a problem with its recently released iPhone X after reports emerged that that phone doesn’t work in cold temperatures.

Dubbed “Coldgate” by Apple fanboy sites, the problem was first reported on Reddit by a user who said that he had noticed that his iPhone X screen became unresponsive when he stepped outside into cold weather. “It literally takes 2 seconds from going inside to the cold outdoors and my screen stops being very responsive,” user u/darus214 said. “I try swiping on websites and it doesn’t register my finger. It’s very noticeable.”

Surprisingly, Apple confirmed that there was an issue, saying that it was related to a rapid change of temperature. “We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment,” the company told The Loop. “After several seconds the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update.”

The news that Apple’s highly expensive new phone doesn’t like cold temperatures comes days after it was revealed that the phone was the “most fragile iPhone ever built.” Despite Apple’s claims of the iPhone X has “the most durable glass ever in a smartphone,” The Guardian reported that a firm that specializes in testing phones found that the X model easily breaks when dropped from a height of six feet. It also said the phone was the most expensive iPhone to repair as well.

When Apple intends on releasing a fix for Coldgate isn’t clear yet. Nor is it clear how a software fix would solve an issue that would appear primarily related to hardware.
