Twitter adds a new enterprise software link for chatbots and customer service

Twitter Inc. on Tuesday announced it’s making an enterprise version of its Account Activity application programming interface available to software developers.

The new API will allow developers to build more sophisticated applications for businesses that want to engage with customers through chatbots, direct messages and other methods. More specifically, the enterprise Account Activity API is for those who need more data, such as large numbers of accounts, multiple webhook URLs and reliability features such as retries, and managed support.

The API was released in beta in April, providing the full set of activities related to individual accounts in real time. That includes user activity such as likes, mentions, retweets and replies.

Twitter said it’s also extending the beta for its standard Account Activity API, which delivers data on activities for up to 35 accounts.

In addition to the new API, Twitter said it’s launching a suite of developer tools for Direct Messages out of beta. The tools include features such as Quick Replies, Welcome Messages, Custom Profiles, Buttons on messages and Customer Feedback Cards, the company said.

These tools have already been put into use by companies including Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Viacom International Inc.’s MTV channel to create chatbots. Meanwhile, companies such as Tesco Plc and Evernote Corp. are using the features to power their customer service systems.

The new API and developer features are part of a much wider API refresh by Twitter, which wants to strengthen its ties with the developers community following years of stop-and-start efforts. As part of this drive, Twitter in November launched a premium API for developers that includes additional data such as tweets per request, more complex queries and enhanced search features.
