Chase the rainbow: Apple will offer new iPhone models in multiple colors

A new report from famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple is set to offer its new iPhone’s in a range of new colors, a shift away from Apple’s usual black, white and occasionally silver phones.

Detailed in a research note reported by 9to5Mac, Kuo said the new iPhones will come in a “plethora of colors.” The 6.5-inch model will be offered in black, white and gold, while the entry-level 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will offer “grey, white, blue, red and orange.”

The report also noted that grey and white may be references to the Space Grey and Silver finishes seen on the current iPhone X. It’s not made clear whether the red model will simply be a red iPhone or a “PRODUCT(RED)” iPhone, a special edition phone that Apple usually launches in the months following the initial lineup. If true, though, this will be the first time Apple has offered iPhones in a wide variety of colors since the iPhone 5c was announced in 2013.

Kuo confirmed reports that emerged in February that Apple plans to launch three new models, with the 6.5-inch model coming in at about $1,000, while a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone X-style device will be available for about $700. The naming for the models is still not known, though the 6.5-inch model was previously rumored to be called the iPhone X Plus.

Kuo is positive on Apple’s sales prospects for the new phones. “We expect the demands for the new 6.5-inch OLED iPhone will be better than iPhone X because of similar or lower price but with larger display, dual-sim dual-standby (DSDS), and three possible casing colors (black, white, and gold),” Kuo wrote. “The new 6.1-inch LCD iPhone is expected to boost better-replacement demands than iPhone 8/8s did due to being equipped with full-screen, Face ID, selling price lower than $700 USD, DSDS and five possible casing colors (grey, white, blue, red and orange).”

Apple traditionally launches a new lineup in September. A report in May noted that the A12 chips that will power the new phone lineup had gone into production in Taiwan.
