It’s that time of the year again. E3, the largest conference of the gaming industry, is just a month away. This year will be special: it’s been 5 years that the “next generation” consoles started appearing, yet no new consoles are expected to appear. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect.
New hardware
High expectations are held for this year’s hardware reveals. The big three (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) are expected to demo new extensions for each console:
Sony: the Playstation Move controller, which is a push towards a Wii-HD type of experience. Possibly also a follow-up to the PSP (PSP2?), after the flop of PSP Go last year.
Microsoft: a 360 Slim with a price drop, maybe a 3D revision, and the demo of Natal, by Ci

[Editor’s Note: I was clearing out the back of the fridge, and we found TONS of extra leftover CES stories. So guess what? Today’s leftover day. Trust me, it’s just as good nuked today as it was baked yesterday, and if you don’t like it I know of some kids in a Sally Struthers country that would love it. –mrh] I got a chance to go hands on and give an overview of the new LightSpeaker Wireless Home Audio System from the official CES 2010 press pre-show.

At CES 2010, no battleground rages between the traditional gatekeepers of the last century and the connected upstarts of the next like television. TV is center stage at this year's show, from Samsung's stunning 3D TV line to Panasonic's 152-inch monster plasma to the buzzworthy hardware details surrounding the Boxee Box. Connected Blu-ray players and set-top boxes dominate the show floor, with YouTube and Netflix seemingly available on every screen one can see. But while the technology delivering "over-the-top" TV is cause célèbre on the show floor, the content that technology delivers is the subject of not-so-quiet caution in the hallways and panels behind the CES hype. But not even the sexy gear grabb

Today’s the last day of CES, but we’re getting our first few features done and posted. First up, Boxee. A company that continues to gain momentum and pile up awards for their slick, robust and cutting-edge interface. At this year's CES they introduced their Beta to the world, along with a set-top "Boxee Box" that simply blew us away. It's not surprising that they won the "Last Gadget Standing".

It is CES time again, and this year, Samsung is going all out with several firsts, a lot of ICES Innovation awards (23 actually!), and a commitment to creating the future of home entertainment. Home entertainment continues to get increasingly exciting with slimmer and cooler televisions and blu-ray players, but the basic experience of watching a movie from your couch hasn’t changed much in many years. Not to worry, in 2010, the 3D experience will make its way from theaters to your homes. While the first 3D film premiered back in 1922, the technology that is used today is much more advanced and has finally made in-roads to work with the content Hollyw

We’re finally done with opening day for the public here at CES and lots of IPTV and Over The Top (OTT) stuff happening at the show. Last night Microsoft as usual kicked things off with the first big keynote of the event. Steve Ballmer led the way with some help from some Windows and Microsoft Media folks to talk up what Microsoft accomplished in the last year and where they are going. Overall the keynote was not as solid as it could have been and of course people, myself included, really wanted to see some live demos of Project Natal. What seems to have been missed by most people, partly due to the flow of the presentation and partly b/c people are not too familiar with all the changes that are going on with the variou

When it comes to S3D systems, people always get all worked up about the eyewear. If only we didn’t have to “don goofy headgear” (one of these cliché words makes it into just about every 3D article), then the S3D experience would be a good one. Just this morning on MSNBC, a newscaster reporting from CES listed that Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung would be showing 3D displays, and excitedly highlighted that the Panasonic system was without eyewear, as if that were some sort of utopia. What everyone seems to forget is that most people wear some sort of eyewear—sunglasses, reading glasses, prescription glasses—every single day, without complaint, and even as a fashion statement. Generally, we are happy to wear glasses. Crummy 3D expe
