GI Joe DVD Release Ushers Augmented Reality into the Mainstream

image It’s been a minute since we talked about augmented reality here at SiliconANGLE.  It’s interesting to me since it went from being “bleeding edge,” as I put it (and categorize it here at the blog) to being commonly accepted in record time.  Since SiliconANGLEr, and Brunner Digital SVP Rick Gardinier first asked here “AR is Cool, but What’s the ROI” back in July, we’ve seen an explosion of not just augmented reality applications and marketing gimmicks to companies specializing in creating utilitarian augmented reality.

A friend of mine who is working on the GI Joe DVD release tipped me off on some AR work they’re doing with the cover of the DVD and Blu-Ray boxes.

The game works when you take the box, point your webcam at it while at the site, and you’re able to move the characters around while you play by changing the physical camera angle on your webcam or moving the box around.

It’s interesting to watch this stuff go mainstream in such a quick turnaround. The technology seems to have become quite solid pretty quick, and will only work to further push this emergent tech into the mainstream (like it or not).
