MagicJack Casts a Spell on Cell Providers
News and details on an exclusive story that debuted here on Silicon Angle about the new MagicJack Femtocell device has been spreading on the web like wildfire. The word will spread. They probably won’t be needing those commercials, but we’ll probably see them anyway.
Sparsely released details have the device costing around 40 dollars and available about 4 months from now. The service will cost $20 a year. We’re talking express ticket to mass adoption here. The gist of this is that you will able to use most cell phones to call through the device which acts essentially as a cell tower in your home and places calls through the MagicJack software.
According to the press release:
Not only can people connect to their own magicJack device but they can also connect to other femtocell-enabled magicJacks at friends’ houses and businesses. All the user has to do is come within eight feet of the magicJack one time to register the connection and then talk away within a range of a 3000 square foot house.
A majority of my cell calls are made from my home and my monthly usage would practically be nil. It would also help with bad reception spots inside my home, a common complaint. I know I would be in on this and probably most everyone I know.
The question posed is what if any actions are the cell co’s going to do about this? Looking at the news stream, there have not been any public responses thus far. Can they do anything about this? I am betting that there some legal departments getting some calls today. Honestly I think this is a great product, but it will be challenged. It is my opinion that if I purchase a device to transmit within my home, then it is legal. We may see the approach get into more complicated perspectives about circumvention and who knows what else. Again, I have my ear to the ground for peeps from cell co’s.
I’m looking forward to Mike’s update on this story.
