LiquidCable: Free Cable TV Over the Internet?
LiquidCable is a service that promises to deliver a full lineup of broadcast quality TV over the internet. At CES last week, I met with Evan Johnson, LiquidCable’s Vice President of Content, and he told me that they have finalized many contracts and are in the final stages of other major contract negotiations. The plan to launch in Q2 of this year, and they claim they will offer a channel lineup that rivals most cable and satellite providers.
Their “secret sauce” is a combination of a proprietary compression combined with special filtering technology that allows them to send broadcast quality IPTV with half of the bandwidth of other internet content providers, which substantially lowers the operational cost of their network.
From the marketing materials he sent over:
iquid Cable’s proprietary technology gives consumers crystal clear television for free to everyone with a Blu-ray internet connection.
Our patented Blue Wolf content preconditioning consists of a series of sophisticated algorithms that reduce or remove noise, grain, and blurring that are encountered during aggressive video compression, enabling us to drop our streaming rate to 900kBs (Industry standard is 2.1MBs).
All audio content is encoded using DTS/Neural Surround, giving viewers superb sound in all forms of playback.
They also have an sophisticated algorithm that is develops per user profiles and is supposedly very good at targeted delivery of relevant advertisements. If this service is anywhere near what they describe it will be revolutionary.
I will be keeping a close eye on this for future updates.
