Android Bringing Up the Rear in Gaming
With the Game Developers Conference happening last week in San Francisco and Microsoft hosting their Mix conference in Vegas this week, gaming on smart phones has been a hot topic of late. As it now stands from a platform perspective for all the modern platforms that developers can choose from today Android is currently bringing up rear when it comes to professional/indie game titles. I will leave the iPhone out of this argument since it rules the smartphone world, everyone already pre-ordered their iPad.
Last week Palm publically their new PDK framework for webOS at GDC to much applause and interest from the development community. For having what the public deems as insignificant market share in the smart phone sector Palm has done a great job getting early developers on board including EA. Palm’s PDK news was topped off by the folks at Epic showing off their Unreal Engine running on a Pre Plus.
This week at Mix the Windows Phone team has been unveiling the innards of their new OS and getting into details about the graphics and gaming capabilities that the device will deliver. With developer tools including their XNA Game Studio and the Windows Phone platform ties to XBox Live gaming experiences it will no doubt be a huge success when the device comes out later in the year.
So where is the Android platform currently in all of this? With Google IO coming in May the Big-G is most likely getting their mobile engineers and partners in line to show off something at the event. Currently only one gaming related session is booked. We will be on the lookout for more Android gaming related news/hype as the event approaches.
