98% Of ATT Smartphone Customers Use less than 2 GB of Data Per Month.
Or so they think. I asked a couple of my AT&T sources about the new pricing and they did manage to produce new data:
We think the new plans will enable even more people to enjoy the benefits of the mobile Internet. That’s what the plans were designed for and that’s what we think they’ll do. The plans include a large amount of data to enable customers to enjoy their favorite online activities. In fact, the plans contain far more data than the average customer currently uses. Today, 98 percent of our smartphone customers use less than 2 GB of data per month on average, and 65 percent of smartphone customers use less than 200 MB per month on average.
If that is truly accurate, $25 for 2GB saves you 5 dollars a month but penalizes you an extra 10 for each 1gb overage. The other stat says basically $15 a month for 200MB is more than enough for most of their customers. What about reminders when you get close to your limit?
Customers will have easy access to their usage information and we’ll send them text messages and emails as they approach their monthly data allowance. These steps will help give people the peace of mind to use their mobile broadband connection to its fullest.
My source also mentioned their plan to promote their over 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots but really, T-mobile already conditioned us regarding that. If Iwant wifi, I’ll use it at work or home, not while I’m mobile in the city. Leaving one access point and finding the next one is a frustrating nightmare.
In addition, we provide smartphone customers with unlimited usage to more than 20,000 AT&T Hot Spots in the U.S., and qualified customers can also to use Wi-Fi in the home, office and elsewhere where available without counting against their monthly data total. And, by providing customers with easy access to their historical usage information and a data calculator to help project future usage, we help people better understand their data usage habits so they can select the data plan option that best meets their needs and budget.
So maybe this will work and maybe it won’t The pudding looks good but we won’t know how it tastes until they give it to us ;-)
