SiliconAngle has witnessed a revolution in information technology unfold, during Vmworld 2010.  Held in San Francisco last week, it is indeed one of the major conferences in the world of virtualization and cloud computing.

There were major announcements made by tech giants during the event. One of them is Novell ‘s newest SUSE Linux Enterprise server, now offered to its wide array of clients. Also announced in the same event is the a virtualized storage system for VMware-based data center for Heineken Netherlands from Compellent.

Fusion-io ‘s ioMemory showcased an impressive demonstration, running more than 500 virtual desktops in single VMware cSphere server. A partnership of BlueArc and Permabit Technology, enabling BlueArc  to expand its deduplication offerings, was also announced in the event. And from VMware itself comes a new Cloud Application Platform, combining its Spring Java development framework with the new VMware vFabric, along with a couple acquisitions.

VMware and Novell’s new server solutions aim for a faster pace in advancing to a fully-virtualized datacenter, by reducing IT complexity and expenses in virtualization and management of IT environments. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server’s broad application supports nearly 6,000 application certifications. The porting of SUSE Linux-based workloads across cloud is now possible.

Compellent’s  new virtualized storage systems for the VMware-based data center for Heineken Netherlands is into finding the best route for upgrading its HP EVA storage systems, facing a challenge that several  IT departments have to provide private cloud computing designed to handle growth, streamlined storage and power usage, and automated data management.  Its Fluid Data storage and server architecture is a solution through its channel partner Intel Access B.V. as it makes it easier for customer “to manage and protect valuable data.”

The new, flash-based memory tier called ioMemory from Fusion-io is taking desktop and server environment performances to the next level. The company showcased what customers can expect from Fusion-io  as it demoed across a 10GbE iSCSI network a stream of tens of thousands of DVD-quality movies and other media.  “Fusion’s ability to efficiently handle the highly random access patterns prevalent in virtualized workloads, aids customers in reducing the cost and complexity of adding multiple virtual machines,” say Neil Carson, CTO of Fusion-io.

The deal between BlueArc and Permabit Technology’s deal enables BluArc to make use of Permabit’s Albireo technology for its deduplication capabilities to boost some key areas such as high performance, scalability, zero impact on performance, data safety and VMware optimization. This will allow BlueArc to compete with NetApp’s existing deduplication technologies.  The only problem now is how to convince EMC, NetApp and HP to use its technologies or otherwise find others who will take the product. One of its prospect should be Isilon, a fast-growing storage company that competes with Blue Arc, LSI and Dell.

VMware’s new platform brings a more centralized set of tools for better performance and portability across clouds. The set of application services includes lightweight application servers, global data management, cloud-ready messaging, dynamic load balancing and application performance management.
