Mobclix has just released their index and an infographic to go along with it. After an extensive survey of Android owners (1,025) across the Mobclix Exchange in October, they’ve come up with these stats for us to enjoy,
Key Findings
- 60% of Android users are under the age of 34
- 8% of Android users switched from an iPhone while 45% of Android Users say Android is their first smartphone
- Android users spend most of their time on Email (37%), Games (21%) and Maps/Navigation (8%).
- 46% of Android users prefer a touch screen over a physical keyboard
- Android users spend 1/7th of what iPhone owners spend on in-app gaming purchases
- Android users have an average of 17 apps on their phone vs 28 apps for iPhone users
- Twice as many Android owners than smartphone users will make a purchase or payment on their device each month
- The top 3 free games preferred by Android users are Angry Birds, Solitaire and Jewels
From these statistics it looks like Android is a “young” handset in a multitude of ways from holding a significant portion of users under the age of 34 and having a chunk who picked them up as their first phone. Although the spending trends as to apps between Android vs iPhone might need further study (and perhaps a much larger data set) it
I am absolutely certain that the publisher of Angry Birds (recently acquired by EA) will be very happy to hear that their game made the first of the three preferred games list.
With Google boasting over 200,000+ Android handsets sold a day back in August, 2010 the survey numbers on this marketplace survey seem pretty paltry; but as long as they’re a solid random sample they likely give us a fair glimpse into some of October’s trends. Still, this is likely just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what we can expect out of Android owners.
