Poynt Grabs Another Location-Based Advertising Patent

Poynt, a leading location-based mobile search engine, has acquired one more patent for its portfolio. The patent was first filed in 2000, and is for delivering offers and coupons to a mobile user based on GPS location and information from the user’s profile.

This is the third patent Poynt has gotten, and is a part of its growing patent portfolio. This advertising patent will act as a barrier to entry for competitors of its location-based search model.

“The services surrounding this patent have been, and will continue to be, a key revenue driver for the Company,” said Andrew Osis, CEO, Poynt Corp. “Mobile commerce begins with the ability to transact within a geographic area where the user is located. With more and more mobile consumers turning to their smartphones for timely information based on where they are and what they are searching for at that moment in time, we expect Poynt will have a rapidly growing audience of new and existing users that will benefit from location-specific advertising and coupons.”

The patent number as awarded by The United States Patent and Trademark Office is 7,870,229. And if it aggressively used by the company, competitors like Foursqaure, Location Labs and Placecast will be most effected.

In other news, we heard about some other developments in location-based news such as the ongoing data storm signals from Groupon.  The industry as a whole is becoming increasingly relevant for a number of things, including marketing and search.  Google’s had a few developments in this arena, as well as Microsoft Bing.  Patent-wise, Poynt is looking to stake out a few industry claims of its own, anticipating where this industry could head in the future.
