Android Pursues Incessant Upgrades as it Overtakes iOS for the First Time

Looks like there is no stopping Android and its developer Google from chasing upgrades and updates for its operating system and product portfolio this 2011. The mobile OS kicked off the year with a huge victory against iOS as it topped the OS list at Millennial Media’s Ad Network.

According to a report mentioned by our own Kristen Nicole, the tie between Apple and Android was broken after the latter performed well in December with an 8% increase month-over-month and 46% impression share. This is compared to the arch-rival’s 32%.

With this huge win, Android is now additional taking steps, having developed quite a number of upgrades. The latest mouth-watering version is rumored to be named “Ice Cream Sandwich”—it would be released after Android 3.0. Honeycomb has already launched to the market. Google head Andy Rubin has been the man behind these delectably named Android versions.

In a report at PCWorld, the introduction of migration tool of SPB Software will aid users in switching from Symbian or Windows Mobile to Android-based networks. To further explain the more technical part, here are some details regarding the migration:

“The tool copies text messages, contacts, call history and bookmarks, and moves them to the new phone. It can be used to transfer data from smartphones based on Symbian S60 3rd edition and up, as well as Windows Mobile 5 and later. The target device must be running Android version 2.1 or later. The actual migration can be done in two ways: either using a memory card or an online service set up by SPB. When the latter is used the data is encrypted and deleted from the server completely after 12 hours, SPB said. The data is also protected by a PIN code.”

Another update could serve well for traveling Android users. Google Translate is an application that basically translates one language from the other, converting in real-time.  Google’s YouTube mobile app has also been updated, responding to the growing demand around online video.  YouTube has been the champion of video’s dogpile approach, but its biggest Hollywood deal to date is quietly seeking new opportunities to compete with premium and specialized content providers like Netflix, Veoh and even Hulu.  Android could play an important part in Google’s hopes to deliver specialized YouTube content as well.
