Top-Level Changes at Microsoft, Cisco. New Marketing, New Mantra.

Longtime Microsoft marketing head Mich Mathews left his office just 6 days ago, and Microsoft has already found a replacement. Twenty-year Microsoft veteran Chris Capossela has been promoted to senior vice president of the Consumer Channels and Central Marketing Group, and will report to COO Kevin Turner.

“Capossela is a 20-year Microsoft veteran who previously ran the Microsoft Office Division. He helmed the launches of Office 2007 and 2010 and related server products. He was also instrumental in ushering Office into the cloud with Office Web Apps and Office 365.”

Capossela also served as a speech assistant to Bill Gates, and a held a number of other positions too. Still, Microsoft is the not the only one who’s doing some staffing changes.

But Microsoft isn’t the only company currently revamping at the top.  Cisco CEO John Chambers released a memo earlier this week saying that his company has “lost its focus, lacks discipline and needs to overhaul its operations.” The company had already undergone several executive-level changes, to little avail.  This is in light of increased competition from Juniper, HP and a number of other competitors – not to mention the 30 percent skid the company’s stock has seen in the past year.

Chambers also wrote “we have disappointed our investors and we have confused our employees,” and further confirms there are about to be some high level changes we can expect from the networking giant.

Going back to Microsoft, we’ve heard other news from the software giant as well – a milestone team-up with Toyota. The Japanese carmaker is moving to the cloud, and the 2 unveiled plans to build a global network set to provide car owners in-car information, navigation and diagnostic services similar to GM’s OnStar offering. The pair plans to invest t $12 million into Toyota Media Service Co., a Toyota subsidiary to develop applications build on Microsoft’s Windows Azure.

Toyota’s suite of new plug-in electric vehicles due out in 2012 will be the first vehicles supporting the network, and all Toyota’s vehicles are expected to support the system in 2015.
