Eye-Fi, maker of the first wireless memory card, has a new product in tow. The Mobile X2 card is an 8GB wireless memory card that provides users the ability to wirelessly upload pictures and videos from their camera to their Android or IOS devices. The X2 card also comes with “Direct Mode” and a number of free apps set to launch later this week, as one particularly notable function.
“The Eye-Fi card can now establish a direct connection to the mobile device by creating its own Wi-Fi network anywhere users capture memories, even if that is miles from a Wi-Fi hotspot.”
In turn, Direct Mode enhances the quality of digital cameras and the connectivity of a user’s smartphone and / or tablet. Users can send media directly from their cameras to the Eye-Fi app, and from there share, edit and backup pictures and videos. Users can also store their media on a PC or an Eye-Fi account, which pretty much brings the X2 card’s personal cloud reach to a full circle.
Eye-Fi Mobile X2 is already available for preorders on Amazon, and will hit Apple and Best Buy stores 5 days from now on April 17 for$ 79.99. Direct Mode will release as a free update to X2 later this week.
Mobile multimedia-sharing is a growing trend as handsets are becoming stronger components supporting such capabilities, and more companies are trying to monetize that. One example is Amazon, who recently launched Cloud Drive. The personal cloud storage service supports Android yet not IOS, and puts a emphasis on multimedia and particularly music.
Another recent development in the personal cloud is the latest Springpad update. The note-taking service now offers a number of new functions including better e-mail capabilities. Content sharing was yet another bulletin the company addressed, and Springpad also released its API.
