Citrix Synergy Recap: Day 1 Was a Blast
Citrix Synergy took center stage yesterday, and it was a fully-loaded launch day for the annual event being held in San Francisco, California. SiliconANGLE.com is there live to witness big announcements, updates and launches. A good part of the day was focused on two core dimensions: the cloud (personal, public and private) and mobile virtualization.
Up first on day one is Mark Templeton, Citrix’ chief executive opening the event with pride of the company’s acquisition of Kaviza. This investment proves to be very promising as they extend VDI portfolio, eliminating the need for provisioning servers, separate connection brokers load balances and shared network storage and promoted cost-efficiency. Before the year ends, Citrix will complete placing its brand on Kaviza. They also launched Management Pack supporting Citrix XenDesktop 5 that will provide benefits like easy installation process and maintenance. Also, the open beta of its GoToMeeting with HD Faces product was announced.
Microsoft came in next and talked about their alignment with Citrix via different applications, with emphasis to their V-Alliance Desktop Virtualization formed late last year. The event also highlighted its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enable seamless corporate connection to different AWS platforms including Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2), Virtual Provider Cloud (VPC) and Elastic Block Storage (EBS). Together, AWS and Citrix will deliver advanced cloud solutions, enhanced interoperability and optimization for Windows and XenServer customers. Rackspace was also given time to discuss their piece relative to the market boost received by open source growth. This fusion will give birth to the Citrix Project Olympus that will primarily concentrate on XenServer 6.0.
Other noteworthy developments around the Citrix sphere is its proactive support services and online knowledge sharing interest. The enterprise also took it to the next step as they brought Windows apps experience to Chrome OS. Citrx is also fired up creating killer apps and virtualizing smartphones and tablets.
One of the anticipated speakers, Citrix’ Simon Crosby will take on the podium tomorrow. But even before he talks about the company’s future on day two, he stopped by The Cube and made mention of some significant developments such as Citrix contributing to Open Stack with mega-cloud deployment capabilities.
