Huawei Symantec Launches First All-Flash Array

Huawei Symantec (HS), a joint venture between Chinese storage and networking equipment manufacturer Huawei and software giant Symantec, announced the latest addition to its product portfolio: the OceanSpace Dorado S2100. The all-flash array is probably one of the first ever developed by a SAN and NAS storage array vendor, and aims to offer lower prices compared to competing offerings by Texas Memory Systems, Violin and others.

The system reportedly achieves this level of cost savings using controllers that change fan speed based on a machine’s temperature and CPU cloak rates, which are based on workloads to lower power consumptions.

“It consumes 320W, with HS saying this is a 90 per cent saving when compared to an array of 200 hard disk drives delivering the same number of random read IOPS. The controllers were developed by HS in-house.”

HS is targeting a fairly small market. In terms of capacity, SSD offerings are more expensive than HDD products, but the main target audience of the Dorando S2100 will be the type of organizations such as financial institutions that run high performance application. On this level, SSD does pay off, but it will also mean HS will be competing with EMC’s VNX array in certain areas.

The flash storage market had some news from Fusion-io’s end as well. The hardware acceleration tech maker beat expectations and raised $233.7 million in its recent public offering, however its shares dropped 1.3 percent today to $31.70 after some mixed analyst ratings. The company also got a low ranking in a different area: among LinkedIn, Zynga and the other companies that had a very successful initial public offering this year, Fusion-io’s site is the slowest to load. A speed test by Coach Wei reveals that the business social network topped the list with 1.42 seconds, followed by the social game developer Zynga and Pandora, with Fusion-io at the bottom of the list.
