3D Gaming Gets Boost with Intel-Havok Purchase

Intel-acquired Havok, a provider of interactive software solutions for the games, entertainment and simulation industries, today announced the acquisition of Trinigy, a 3D game engine provider which the company has established a partnership with for years now. The terms of the deal were not revealed.

“We are delighted to acquire this highly experienced, proven team,” said David Coghlan, Managing Director of Havok. “This acquisition will extend the reach of both companies’ technologies across new geographies and market segments. We are excited by the opportunities that the combination of Havok and Trinigy will bring as the industry continues to broaden in terms of target platforms, markets, budget sizes and distribution models.”

Trinigy’s Vision Game Engine has been employed by a good deal of games and simulation companies across all major platforms, from PC to game consoles such as Playstation, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, as well as browsers and mobile devices. Some of its clients include Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft, and the company has offices in Germany, Texas and Korea.  The engine’s name will be changed to Havok Vision Engine after the acquisition.

The deal is expected to close by mid-August. After the acquisition, Havok will start assimilating Trinigy into its operations.

Intel is on an acquisition spree. It also bought Infineon Technologies AG-WLS from Infineon Technologies AG, Silicon Hive BV and SySDSoft, SiPort Inc. in 2011 alone. It has pending transactions as well, including that with Fulcrum Microsystems Inc. and minority stakes from Bitway Co Ltd from Toppan Printing Co Ltd. and Nordic Edge AB. Deciphering the pattern of the acquisitions, Intel is eying cloud networking trends.
