This Week in the Cloud: From Backup to Mobile

Several companies had some notable updates in the cloud space this week, and it seems mobile is the segment that really stood out.  Enterprises are starting to give their workers more flexibility to facilitate better productivity, and collaboration, as well as and increased, or rather extended availability.

The first development is the latest edition of Mozy, EMC’s enterprise-scale cloud backup service.  MozyPro now comes with enhanced security: it’s ISO 27001 certified and SAS 70 Type II audited, and access permissions to company data stored in EMC’s datacenters have been beefed up with a personal key and one-time use key required for the process. MozyPro is also faster, with 100 times faster scanning than before according to EMC.

Joynet, a cloud firm that offers a platform-as-a-service called JoyentCloud.com, as well as other products including the SmartOS open-source operating system, raised $5 million in funding according to an SEC filing.  This brings the total capital the 7 year old company raised so far to an impressive $30 million.

Closer to the personal enterprise cloud, several other companies also had big news. Popular cloud storage provider Box announced an enterprise version of its offering.  This edition integrates with Salesforce and features more security options, among other things.

Wyse PocketCloud, a consumer cloud service, has updated its mobile app for iOS and Android.  The mobile app offers companies a sharing, collaboration and storage suite that packs cloud integration, and now it’s also available for a bigger audience of users.  The company announced support for Cius, the Android-power biz tablet shipped by long time partner Cisco.

Lastly, VMware also got deeper into the mobile space by rolling out updates to its SlideRocket and Socialcast apps , which now offer better sharing and security.
