RIM’s Big Plans for NFC: Do the Bump

Near Field Communication technology  is the hot feature that every mobile company wants to have in their arsenal, especially as businesses are also pushing for cardless and moneyless transactions–they’re easier for both buyers and sellers.

But while companies like Google take the mobile wallet approach to applying NFC technology, RIM has a different plan in mind.  RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie unveiled BalckBerry Tag during his keynote presentation at the GITEX conference in Dubai saying,

“BlackBerry Tag is an exciting and innovative feature that makes sharing contact information and multimedia content effortless and seamless,” said Balsillie. “BlackBerry Tag opens a new dimension to the BlackBerry platform that is powerful, simple and intuitive and we think it will be welcomed by both users and developers.”

BlackBerry Tag will allow users to share contact information, documents, URLs, photos and other multimedia content by simply tapping their BlackBerry smartphones together.

RIM has incorporated NFC in all their recently launched devices like the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and BlackBerry Curve 9350/9360/9370 smartphones, and support for the BlackBerry Tag will come in the next BlackBerry 7 update.
