Droid RAZR, Galaxy Nexus Take the Spotlight as Android Heats Up

The much awaited event from Google and Samsung is yet to commence, but there have been some exciting leaks in the past 24 hours with regards to Motorola and Samsung’s upcoming devices, especially as the Galaxy Nexus is expected to feature Google’s updated Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

A compelling photo and spec catalogue of the impending Motorola Droid RAZR was leaked by Droid Life yesterday. While Motorola only recently released the gorgeous Motorola Droid Bionic on Verizon last month, it is facing great competition from Samsung and Apple and keeping its pace with quality product releases would be an indispensable asset for Google’s latest acquisition target. Samsung’s Nexus Prime running Android Ice Cream Sandwich is also expected to come out today, and like the Droid Bionic and Droid RAZR, it’s likely to be a Verizon special.

Rumor has it that the Droid RAZR will boast compelling specifications that will elevate it amongst the industry’s most powerful devices, Android and otherwise. It’s expected to feature a 4.3-inch 960×540 display coated in Gorilla Glass, a dual-core 1.2-GHz Texas Instruments OMAP processor and 1GB of RAM, plus an 8 megapixel rear camera that can capture 1080p HD video and some pretty wild 4G LTE support from Verizon. LTE is something that the recently launched iPhone 4S lacks, and if you’re unsatisfied with Apple’s new smartphone, Motorola Droid RAZR could be the answer to your prayers.

Moving on to Samsung’s big unveil, the Galaxy Nexus is expected to show off Android’s upcoming OS version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It looks forward to denting, if not capsizing the boat of iPhone 4S, which exceeded sales projections of  4 million devices in its first weekend of availability.  It’s also expected to launch on Verizon with 4G LTE support, and with extensive features of course. The Galaxy Nexus would be a slender device with 1GB RAM, a powerful battery to combat the life-sucking LTE capabilities, a TI OMAP 4460 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and a gorgeous 4.65-inch 1280 x 720-pixel Super AMOLED HD with curved glass.

The Galaxy Nexus isn’t the only exciting thing about this release–it also has a lot to do with Android 4.0. Ice Cream Sandwich looks like a nifty software that can compete head-to-head with iOS 5 and who knows, it might actually be the best thing about the forthcoming Samsung device. The Galaxy Nexus was believed to release on October 27 but the leaked Verizon MAP pricing for the device suggest that the actual date might either be November 3 or November 10. Let’s also take into account the device line’s growing popularity as Samsung seems to be timing a holiday release.

Apple’s iPhone may be the  mobile market’s strong hold right now, and it has indubitably gotten rid of several rivals. However, the fight is far from over. Motorola and Samsung sure are fighting back.
