ActiveState Rolls Out New Features to Stackato

ActiveState updated its flagship offering dubbed Stackato, adding new management and monitoring capabilities to the private platform-as-a-service that freshly enters into public beta. ActiveState, the company behind the Python and Perl programming languages, has built its offering on top of VMware’s open-source Cloud Foundry.

This latest release introduces the upgraded Stackato Admin Dashboard, which now provides more transparency by providing admins access to activities in their private cloud environment. That encompasses things like memory usage, data services deployed, and languages used, as well as tasks such as the deployment of a new app.

Another addition to the platform is the first fruit of an earlier partnership with New Relic: Stackato users working with Java, PHP, Phyton and Ruby now have access to the  New Relic Standard Edition real-time application monitoring tool, which tracks  application performance, bottlenecks and so forth. Lastly, Stackato has deeper integration with the Spring Tool Suite (STS) on Eclipse, now allowing developers to upload files from their IDEs more directly to the cloud.

“As an enterprise-grade private PaaS, Stackato provides development teams with the power of choice, while empowering IT with the tools to effectively manage the PaaS and reduce complexity,” said Bart Copeland, the president and chief executive of ActiveState.

ActiveState is fleshing out Stackato with new features and improvements, as well as a push to create an ecosystem that will help propel the platform forward. One of the more notable initiatives in this area was a partnership with OpenStack announced  in October.

The as-a-service industry is accelerating with the rest of the cloud industry, and the platform-as-a-service market is no expectation. This highly competitive space has seen a few developments recently, including a $15 million funding round in Appcelerator led by the Mayfield Fund, Translink Capital, and Red Hat.
