CareFusion’s Wireless Amp: The Future of EEG Devices

Welcome to another technology breakthrough in the medical field.  CareFusion, a global medical technology corporation, recently launched its wireless diagnostic and monitoring neurological device – the Nicolet EEG ( electroencephalogram ) Wireless Amplifier.  The company is famous for manufacturing health care technologies, such as Alaris IV pumps and Pyris automated dispensing and patient identification systems.  CareFusion specializes in reducing medical errors and helping prevent health care associated infections.

The Nicolet EEG Wireless Amplifier is a device that captures high-resolution brain wave data used for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases and conditions.  Examples of these conditions are epilepsy, brain trauma, stroke, brain tumors and sleep disorders.  The amplifier’s real time data can be transferred wirelessly, or in tethered mode.  In addition, the data is stored in the product’s on-board memory for a continuous recording when patients are outside the coverage range of a monitoring computer.   This new product is very suitable and applicable for hospitals, clinics, emergency vehicles as well as in-home ambulatory settings.

With this new invention, CareFusion now gives their customers a comprehensive neurodiagnostic monitoring equipment providing quality and reliable data to medical practitioners for a more effective patient care.

“Wireless acquisition of EEG data gives patients admitted to the epilepsy monitoring unit greater freedom and comfort without risking loss of critical data due to disconnection of the amplifier,” said Chad Carlson, M.D., assistant professor of neurology at the New York University Langone Medical Center Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.

“The ability to record up to 64 channels of EEG data at up to 12 kHz should allow for further advances in clinical  EEG analysis and interpretation.”

Moreover, the Vice President and General Manager of NeuroCare ate CareFusion, Mary de Sousa added “With the introduction of the new wireless amplifier, hospitals and clinics have a new standard of care available to them for diagnosing, monitoring and helping them treat patients with neurological disorders.”

A healthy industry in the making

Just last month, it was bionic contact lenses looking to dominate the market, converting the ordinary contact lens into a powerful lens wherein hands free access to the internet is possible, as well as the availability of medical data such as blood sugar levels and the tracking and monitoring of pressure inside the eye.

Tthe Nicolet EEG Wireless Amplifier will be available worldwide, and demonstrated by CareFusion at the 2011 American Epilepsy Society meeting on December 3-7 in Baltimore.
