Broadcom, Others Tap SmartTV Trends
In order to offer consumers a solution to enjoy watching their favorite television content wherever they want on whatever device they want, Sling Media strikes a deal with Broadcom to feature Sling Media SDK into Broadcom’s latest set-top box (STB) system-on-a-chip (SoC) platforms. This will give users a full-featured multi-screen, multi-platform viewing solution that’s been key to Sling Media’s success.
Keeping with the times
The interoperability of the two company’s technology will breathe life into an array of content, with a reliable viewing experience for customers who covet a simple yet high-quality way to watch TV while on the go. There’s a growing demand for video consumption as broadband-connected smartphones and tablets plague the market.
“It’s clear that consumers expect a wide array of television viewing options on their favorite wireless devices, and EchoStar’s Sling Media technology solution is the gold standard for placeshifting,” said Dan Marotta, executive vice president and general manager, Broadcom.
“SlingLoaded support on our high performance set-top box solutions paves the way for exciting new mobile entertainment experiences.”
The set-top boxes will be available by the third quarter, Sling Media says.
Showtime takes to smartTVs
On the other hand, Brightcove, a leading global provider of cloud content services, and Roku, a leading streaming platform, announced a partnership with Showtime interactive with plans to launch an app for Roku devices featuring HD promotional content from Showtime hit series Shameless and new comedy series House of Lies.
“We are excited to work with Brightcove and Roku to promote some of our most popular programming to the fast-growing Roku community,” said David Preisman, Vice President of Interactive TV, Showtime Networks Inc. “Our strong relationship with Brightcove and use of the Video Cloud platform makes it easy for us to bring our video content to new platforms like Roku and expand the reach of our initiatives.”
The Showtime promotional apps on Roku features high-definition sample episodes, sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes video features and is powered by Brightcove Video Cloud.
SmartTVs on the rise
From Broadcom to Showtime, more media companies are looking to smartTVs as a way to expand distribution amongst new tech trends. According to a new report from MarketsandMarkets, the smartTV industry is expected to reach $265 billion by 2016, up from $86 billion in 2010. That’s a promising outlook for an industry that’s growing around on-demand content and personalized programming, taking full advantage of connected devices and widespread access to broadband connectivity.
