VMware is beefing up its virtualization initiatives, a growing number of which include offerings that cater to the end user within the enterprise, rather than organization-wide virtualization solutions alone. Mobile has been one of the focuses for the company lately, a trend that is quite steadily growing in the enterprise space.
VMware was actually one of the first major IT firms that announced it has adopted an organization-wide bring-your-own-device or BYOD policy. Workers can switch to their own smartphones, rather than having to use often ancient company-issued devices with very limited functionality.
One of the company’s freshest ventures into this area is a piece of software still in development that lets users run two different profiles on their Android devices: one for personal use that contains all the relevant data and apps, and a second ‘account’ that is solely dedicated for work. VMware Horizon Mobile, as it’s called, has made an appearance at this week’s CES in Las Vegas, where it announced two new major supports.
“We’ve known LG and VMware have been working on this since February, but the big news today is that Verizon and Telefonica wil be launching a phone with the tech “in the coming months.”
No one’s getting more specific than that, and we’re told it’ll be on new LG devices only — the Revolution you see here is just a proof of concept. Still, it’s interesting, and should make that whole work phone / personal phone split a little easier to manage.
VMware is attacking the mobile scene from several very different angles. Virtualization is one, and it’s also working on its own set of apps. In September 2011 we’ve covered the release of the new SlideRocket and Socialcast, both of which are the fruits of an earlier social enterprise acquisition spree.
