Today Apache Hadoop services/support vendor Hortonworks and data warehousing vendor Teradata announced a partnership. The companies will work together to help customers best determine how to use Apache Hadoop.
It’s not as large a deal as the one Hortonworks’ competitor Cloudera struck with Oracle – and Teradata also has a partnership with Cloudera – but it’s certainly a good partnership and paves the way for more deals. Last week Hortonworks quietly shuffled its management team leading to speculation that Hortonworks would abandon its all open source guns and sell a proprietary/open core Hadoop product – speculation Hortonworks ultimately shot down.
Companies are still trying to determine how best to use Apache Hadoop, and data warehousing and analytics vendors are looking towards Hadoop integration to stay relevant. For example, EMC Greenplum is partnered with MapR and IBM Netezza is partnered with Cloudera. All these vendors want to remain relevant in the future and want to get in on the ground level of the big data revolution, and partnerships with companies like Cloudera, MapR and Hortonworks are the current vehicle for these vendors to do so. At least until there are more ready made Hadoop applications, consulting is the name of the game in Hadoop.
