Strata Conference: What is Big Data?
I walked the convention center floor at the Strata Conference today and asked people: “What is Big Data?”
It’s such a broad term. The people I interviewed certainly made that point.

I ask the question as still most people do not know what big data is and Hadoop is even more of a question mak. Ironically, Hadoop is far easier to define than big data. Hadoop is a distributed file system. Big data is a concept. And as a concept, everyone has their own idea what it means.
Ambiguity is not the issue, though. Getting past the terms is part of the learning process for people. The only way to learn means finding ways to ask questions instead of starting with a premise and working backwards.
