Currently, there are millions of US government and military e-mail addresses up for sale. Specifically, 2,462,935 U.S government email addresses, and another 2,178,000 U.S military email addresses. So where are they from?
The e-mail addresses for sale are legit, they are actual e-mail addresses from the US government and military acquired by a criminal enterprise and being sold in the black market. So the question is: Why would anyone want these e-mail addresses?
The answer is quite simple, really. These legit e-mail addresses can be used for phishing as well as spreading malware. If you see a message on your inbox and it came from the government, I’m quite positive that you would open it. And opening that message is all it takes for hackers to get your information or infect your system with malware like the Zeus, a Trojan horse that attempts to steal confidential information from the compromised computer.
But are we doomed in the dark ages as cyberthreats flourish?
Fortifying Cybersecurity
Lockheed Martin, an American global aerospace, defense, security, and advanced technology company with worldwide interests, unveiled their $10 million cyber fortress, the NexGen Cyber Innovation and Technology Centre, on Canberra’s Wentworth Avenue.
”We are entering the era of the converged life,” vice-president for cyber security and NexGen innovation, Curt Aubley said. ”In a world of hyper-connectivity you are always online. There are now 840 million people on Facebook. The attack surface – the area of vulnerability – is growing all the time.”
The NexGen Cyber Innovation and Technology Centre is the third of such facility from Lockheed Martin. The facility was constructed ahead of schedule and was finished in less than a year and on budget.
Still, even if they beefed up their infrastructure, they still have to deal with previously identified viruses, malware and trojans which account for 80% of issues but can easily be screened by existing security software. The tricky part is combating the 20% of ”advanced persistent threats.”
