Australians Not Happy With iPad 4G, Temple Run Now On Android

Today’s mobile roundup features Australians angry over “4G,” the arrival of Temple Run on Android, Avira’s new security app and more.

Australians Confused About iPad’s 4G

The third generation iPad boasts that it is capable of connecting to a 4G network, but unfortunately, Apple did not clarify that it is only compatible with 4G in North America.  In short, even if your country has 4G, you can’t expect your iPad to perform at that speed.  And this is exactly what Australians are angry about.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission argues Apple has misled with its “iPad WiFi + 4G” name “because it represents to Australian consumers that the product [can] connect to a 4G mobile data network in Australia, when this is not the case.”

“The ACCC is seeking urgent interlocutory relief to ensure consumers are made aware of the correct technical capabilities of this device” the commission said in a statement today. “Additionally the ACCC is seeking final orders including injunctions, pecuniary penalties, corrective advertising and refunds to consumers affected.”

Temple Run finally on Android

The much awaited Temple Run for Android finally arrived on Google Play today.

Temple Run is a very addictive game in which your goal is just to outrun the evil monkeys chasing you because you stole a cursed idol from their temple.  Simple, right?  Not quite.  This fast-paced game may look quite simple but it’s really intense.  You need fast fingers so you can make quick right and left turns, jump and slide to avoid obstacles, collect coins and special abilities, while making sure you don’t hit the sides, as this will slow you down.  Because if you get too slow, the evil monkeys will catch up and you will die.

Avira helps you locate your phone

IT security expert Avira announced the general availability of Avira Free Android Security software which can remotely locate, lock or erase an Android phone anywhere in the world to maintain security. It can even make the phone ‘scream’ to help you find it hiding behind the couch cushions.

“Since malware threats for Android are still relatively uncommon, we first focused on anti-theft and remote device management features in Avira Free Android Security,” said Travis Witteveen, COO of Avira. “We felt these features are something our customers need and want today, and as the threat landscape evolves we will add anti-malware features as needed.”

The app features:

  • Remote Scream – From the Web console, trigger the phone to scream for 20 seconds to help locate the device (or scare the person who took it). See video.
  • Remote Lock – If the phone goes missing, the owner can lock the device with a 4-digit PIN and display a “call owner” phone number on the screen. Unlike the remote wipe features in other software, remote lock will completely secure all data on the phone but it can be unlocked when the device is eventually found.
  • Location Tracking – The Avira app on the Android device can send real-time location coordinates back to a display on Google Maps.

First successful mobile ECG

AliveCor, the developer of a breakthrough mobile electrocardiogram (ECG) recorder, announced results from a study that demonstrated how the company’s ECG monitoring device is intuitive and allows users to learn and characterize their heart rates by using the hand-held device in their hands or on their chest. The data from the credit card-sized wireless device is designed to help physicians and health care providers monitor and assess their patients’ heart health for a variety of medical reasons.

The AliveCor smartphone ECG is an innovative, investigational medical wireless device that incorporates electrodes into a wireless case that snaps onto the back of a smartphone, allowing for wireless single-lead recording of 30-second rhythm strips that are stored securely in the cloud and the device itself. The AliveCor smartphone ECG is designed to be compatible with various mobile platforms, including iPhone, iPad and Android devices.
