Spotify Tunes Up Android but Still Has a Ways to Go

Spotify for Android gets an update with a complete design makeover and improved navigation, more social media integration and high resolution artist images.  The update comes at a time when users have had many complaints on the previous version of the Spotify Android app, claiming it was too slow and barely functional.

To take a look at the most important update first – the Android app now has support for playlist folders, just as iOS and Windows Phone 7 versions have had a long time.  The design now has a new navigation slide-out tray from the right side of the screen and high resolution artist images.

The Android app now comes with more social features, like viewing your friend’s playlists and profile pages. Other features include sound settings up to 320kbps and artist recommendations.

“That’s not the end of it,” Spotify said. “We’re working hard on adding further features, including folders and Last FM scrobbling, before the app goes live in Google Play.”

The update of Spotify for Android, now available for download as Beta version, is compatible with Google’s latest mobile operating system, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. You can try the new version if you don’t want to wait until it comes out on Google Play. Users will need to pay for a premium subscription to listen to their music on go.

Spotify has been busy developing new ideas for music lovers.  Just las week the company launched the Spotify Play Button, a widget that you can embed on your site to share your favorite tunes to readers and fans.

And earlier this week Spotify announced a global partnership with Coca-Cola and teamed with AT&T, McDonalds, Intel, and Reebok to unveil the latest series of branded apps. As part of the partnership, Coca-Cola will launch an app on Spotify and will integrate online streaming cloud music service on its Facebook page.
